- 1 slice bread your choice: white, whole grain, brioche, etc.
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
Spread about a half a tablespoon of butter on one side of your bread. Use a round cookie cutter or the rim of a glass, to cut a circle out of the center of the bread slice. Keep the bread circle to toast alongside.
Heat a nonstick or cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Add another ½ tablespoon of butter and let it melt, spreading it evenly across the pan.
Place the bread slice (and the cut-out circle) in the pan, butter side up. Toast that side for about 1 to 2 minutes or until lightly golden.
Flip the bread and crack the egg directly into the hole in the bread. Be gentle to keep the yolk intact.
Lower the heat slightly, cover with a lid, and cook until the egg whites are set but the yolk remains runny, about 2-3 minutes
If you prefer your yolks cooked and your egg white more set, break the yolk and flip the toast over and cook on the other side for a minute or two.
Season with a pinch of salt and pepper and serve with your toasty dipping circle.
- You can use olive oil, ghee, or even coconut oil as alternatives for greasing the pan. Just try to use a fat that adds some flavor to the toast so that you aren't left with a greasy taste or texture.
