Equipment

Ingredients

  • 1 slice bread your choice: white, whole grain, brioche, etc.
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Spread about a half a tablespoon of butter on one side of your bread. Use a round cookie cutter or the rim of a glass, to cut a circle out of the center of the bread slice. Keep the bread circle to toast alongside.
  • Heat a nonstick or cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Add another ½ tablespoon of butter and let it melt, spreading it evenly across the pan.
  • Place the bread slice (and the cut-out circle) in the pan, butter side up. Toast that side for about 1 to 2 minutes or until lightly golden.
  • Flip the bread and crack the egg directly into the hole in the bread. Be gentle to keep the yolk intact.
  • Lower the heat slightly, cover with a lid, and cook until the egg whites are set but the yolk remains runny, about 2-3 minutes
  • If you prefer your yolks cooked and your egg white more set, break the yolk and flip the toast over and cook on the other side for a minute or two.
  • Season with a pinch of salt and pepper and serve with your toasty dipping circle.

Notes

  • You can use olive oil, ghee, or even coconut oil as alternatives for greasing the pan. Just try to use a fat that adds some flavor to the toast so that you aren't left with a greasy taste or texture.
