Back when I managed a bookstore with a cafe, I made more blended coffee drinks than I could ever count, so I know exactly what makes one worth ordering. This Blended Mocha Frappuccino is my at-home version with rich chocolate, bold coffee, and a creamy frosty texture that comes together in about 5 minutes. When I want coffee shop flavor without leaving the house, this is what I make.

This Mocha Frappuccino Recipe is a better than Starbucks copycat that you can make easily at home. I learned how to make drinks like this during my time managing a Barnes & Noble with a cafe, where I got very good at making, and drinking, a lot of mocha Frappuccinos. Nothing powered through an overnight holiday reset like a couple of these with a few extra shots.
I like to make mine at home with cold brew for a smoother flavor, but a strong cup of coffee works just as well. You can even use espresso if you want a more bold flavor. However you make it, this version is thick, chocolatey, and honestly better than anything you will get in a drive thru. Extra whip? Duh.

Ingredients & Substitutions
The photo below shows everything you need to make this mocha Frappuccino, and I will walk you through the key ingredients and how to swap them if needed.

- Coffee or cold brew - Use strong brewed coffee, cold brew, or espresso shots.
- Milk - Any milk works here including dairy free options like almond, oat, or soy.
- Chocolate syrup - Store bought or homemade will both work. If I want a deep rich chocolate flavor I'll reach for Torani dark chocolate. If I just want a simple chocolate blended coffee, or reach for Hershey's syrup
- Cocoa powder - Unsweetened cocoa powder adds deeper chocolate flavor beyond just syrup without increasing the sweetness. You can leave it out, or if you like a sweeter frappe, use more chocolate syrup.
- Ice - Essential for that thick blended texture.
- Salt - Just a tiny pinch enhances the chocolate flavor.
See recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.
Variations
Once you have the base recipe, you can make it your own just like a coffee shop menu.
- Double mocha - Add an extra tablespoon of cocoa powder or chocolate syrup for a richer chocolate flavor.
- Mocha chip - Blend in a handful of chocolate chips for texture, similar to a java chip Frappuccino.
- Caramel mocha - Add a drizzle of caramel sauce into the blender, inside the cup, and on top.
- Peppermint mocha - Add a drop or two of peppermint extract for a seasonal twist. Push it over the top by adding in candy cane pieces.
- Breve - Those in the know ask for their coffee beverages breve, which means using half-and-half, or even heavy cream, in place of milk. It gives a thicker, more luxurious almost dessert like beverage. Honestly, it's the way I make it because the world is crazy and so is my frappe cappuccino 😉
Equipment
The first time I made this, I used my old Black & Decker blender and it worked great, with just a few ice chunks left behind. I have even made a half batch in my portable blender, which needed a couple of cycles, but still turned out a solid Frappuccino. For that perfectly smooth, frosty texture though, my Vitamix blender really shines. Use what you have, and if you make these often, it might be worth an upgrade.

Cynthia's Helpful Tips
- Strong coffee - The stronger the better in my opinion! Use bold coffee or espresso so the flavor does not get lost in the ice. I actually prefer to use my cold brew because it's always chilled and ready to frappe!
- Balance - Add a pinch of salt to bring out the chocolate flavor. You won't taste the salt, but you will taste the chocolate!
- Ice ratio - Too much ice makes it watery, too little makes it thin, so stick close to the recipe.
- Blend time - Blend just until smooth to keep that thick texture, then use a long spoon or spatula to reach to the bottom of the blender to feel for big ice chunks. Give it one more quick spin, thenn pour.
- Glass drizzle - Drizzling chocolate in the glass makes it look a coffee shop drink.
Recipe FAQs
Unfortunately no. The texture depends on blending ice into the drink.
Let it cool first or it will melt the ice too quickly. This is why I prefer to use cold brew. Otherwise, make some coffee and stick it in the fridge for later.
Yes, 1 to 2 shots of espresso will give a good strong flavor, but again it needs to cool.
