Making a Mango Smoothie with Yogurt is incredibly simple, and it comes together in just a few minutes! Whether you're blending one up for a quick breakfast, a post-workout snack, or a refreshing treat, this breakfast beverage recipe is as easy as it gets.

Weird but fun fact: I don't particularly love mangoes on their own and, until recently, I wasn't a smoothie fan either. But I once accidentally pulled the lever for mango frozen yogurt, instead of my favorite tart flavor, and absolutely loved it. So I thought 'what if I added mango to a smoothie with some vanilla yogurt and blended it up?' Lemme tell y'all, finding out I like mangoes and smoothies all at the same time was crazy! Let's get blending so you can try for yourself!

Ingredients & Substitutions

With only four ingredients, it's kind of hard to mess this one up. Let's go over the major players and see where you can make changes if you need to:

A top-down view of smoothie ingredients on a white marble surface: a bowl of frozen mango chunks, a small glass of honey, a clear jug of milk, and a bowl of yogurt.
  • Any milk - You can use any milk you prefer – dairy milk or plant-based milk both work equally well. I used a carton of coconut milk, but you can use coconut milk from a can (I always have some on hand to make my vegan biscuits).
  • Yogurt - I used vanilla yogurt, which has a little bit more sweetness. If you use plain unflavored yogurt you may need to add a little bit more sweetener. To make this vegan you can use a vegan yogurt.
  • Honey - I like adding raw organic honey to my mango smoothie, but you can use your favorite sweetener. Agave nectar and maple syrup are two of my favorites!
  • Mango - I prefer to use frozen mango because you get a nice thick smoothie texture, but you can use fresh mangoes of course! Your smoothie might turn out quite as thick, but you can throw in a handful of ice to thicken it up or you can freeze half of your fresh mangoes and do a combination.

See recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.

Variations

I think that this mango yogurt smoothie is perfection as is, but a smoothie is a blank canvas after all. Here are some ways that you can zhuzh yours up:

  • Fruity - You can add an a banana, which will bring sweetness and help thicken your smoothie. Or I sometimes like to buy a bag of frozen "tropical fruits" and throw those in the blender with some yogurt. Delicious!
  • Protein packed - Swap out the plain yogurt and use nice thick Greek yogurt to increase the protein or you could even add in protein-rich cottage cheese. And nobody's gonna stop you from adding in a scoop of your favorite protein powder.
  • Calcium rich - You can add leafy greens to your mango smoothie to increase the calcium, or you can just choose a dairy milk. Combined with the yogurt, it will be loaded with calcium.

Choosing a Blender

You don’t need a high-end blender to make this smoothie—just about any basic model will do the job! I used to have an affordable Black and Decker blender that worked just fine.

These days, I’ve upgraded to a Vitamix blender, and I love how silky smooth my smoothies turn out. But don’t feel like you need to splurge—just use the best blender you have. After all, it’s a simple smoothie, not rocket science!

Step-by-Step Instructions

Below, you'll find step-by-step instructions along with helpful photos to guide you through the process.

A person pours milk from a measuring cup into a transparent blender container, which is partially filled with milk to prepare a mango yogurt smoothie.

Step 1: Add your choice of milk to the jug of your blender.

A hand is holding a spatula, using it to add creamy yogurt from a glass bowl into an electric blender. The blender base is visible, along with some white liquid already inside the jar—perhaps the beginnings of a mango yogurt smoothie.

Step 2: Add in your yogurt.

Step 3: Drizzle in the honey, or whichever sweetener you choose.

A hand holds the lid of a blender filled with chunks of mango and a creamy liquid, set against a light background. Its poised to blend everything into a refreshing mango yogurt smoothie.

Step 4: Finally, drop in your frozen or fresh mangoes and blend on low for about 10 seconds to get things started, then increase to high, or the smoothie setting, for about 30 seconds. Use a long handled spoon or other utensil to get to the bottom and stir, cover again and then blend for another 30 seconds.

A glass is being filled with a creamy, smooth mango yogurt smoothie from a pitcher. Another filled glass sits in the background, set against a light backdrop with natural lighting.

Step 5: Pour into tall glasses.

A hand sprinkles toasted coconut over a tall glass filled with a creamy mango yogurt smoothie. Another glass of the luscious drink is slightly blurred in the background, set on a dark, speckled surface against a light marble backdrop.

Step 6: Top with a dollop of yogurt and some more pieces of mango, or toasted coconut, if you're really feeling tropical vibes.

Hint: For the best flavor and texture, serve your mango yogurt smoothie in a chilled glass or to-go thermos. Just pop it in the fridge or freezer for a few minutes before pouring to keep your smoothie cold and refreshing for longer!

Expert tips

Here are a few tips to make sure you make the best mango smoothie every time:

  • Add liquid first: Pour in the milk and yogurt before the fruit so the blender runs smoothly.
  • Use frozen mango: It makes your smoothie thick, cold, and creamy—no ice needed! Keep some in your freezer for easy smoothies. You can buy it year round, or freeze fresh mango when it's in season (May through September in the U.S.)
  • Make adjustments: If it’s too tart, add another tablespoon of honey. If it’s too thick, add more liquid. If it's too thin, add a handful of ice cubes and blend again.
  • Make it healthier: Use Greek yogurt or add protein powder, or nut butter for protein. You can also add chia or flax seeds for extra fiber.
  • Blend in steps: Start on low to break up the big chunks, then turn it up for a super smooth texture.
  • Drink it fresh: Smoothies are best sipped right after blending, but you can make yours ahead and store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a day. Be sure to shake well before drinking!

Recipe FAQs

Why does my mango smoothie have a grainy texture?

Sometimes commercially frozen mango is processed before it is fully ripe. To avoid graininess you can either freeze your own mango, use fresh mango, or add a tablespoon of heavy dairy cream or coconut cream. Blend it up and it will smooth out the texture.

Can I prep my mango smoothies ahead of time?

Absolutely! Blend your smoothie and store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 24 hours. You can also freeze it in portions and thaw when you're ready to enjoy. Just give it a good shake or a quick blend before drinking to refresh the texture!

Can I add fresh greens to this smoothie?

Yes! You can easily add fresh greens like spinach or kale to a mango yogurt smoothie. Spinach blends in smoothly with a mild flavor, while kale adds more nutrients but has a slightly stronger taste. Start with a small handful and taste, then add more if you want. Blend well for a vibrant, nutrient-packed smoothie!
