I developed this Avocado Banana Smoothie because my husband loves smoothies and I... well, I do not. Every smoothie that I have ever tried has had a texture that made me - well it wasn't good, you know? I'd rather have a stack of fluffy pancakes, but that's just me?
But, if I was going to make a smoothie I wanted one with just enough sweetness, a creamy consistency and some healthy fats as an added bonus (for my heart health and to make my cardiologist happy).
This a great fruit smoothie for beginners. The combination of banana and yogurt is smooth on its own, so half of the "smooth" requirement is met right there. Then I added an entire ripe avocado for creamy flavor and texture that drinks more like a milkshake than a smoothie. Great news for non-smoothers like me!
I decided to sweeten my creamy banana avocado smoothie with just a bit of honey. 2 tablespoon of eliminated any chalky banana flavor that you get in a lot of smoothies and I actually slurped my entire glass before my husband! It is that good!

Ingredients
There are only 5 ingredients, 6 if you count the ice cubes. I love a simple smoothie situation with basically a free ingredient. I feel like a smoothie criminal. It's funny. Look it up.
Greek yogurt note: I personally prefer Greek yogurt. It has a great tangy flavor and brings richness to so many of my recipes like my 2-Ingredient bagels and my favorite mixed berry muffins. If you don't have it you can use plain yogurt. You can even try adding a flavored yogurt like vanilla or mango to amp up the flavor.

Substitutions & Variations
Add a little of this, take out some of that... Smoothie beauty is in the eye of the person blending it. Here are some ideas to change up your avocado banana smoothie recipe:
- Vegan - If you are avoiding dairy products, substitute the milk with your choice of almond milk, soy milk, or oat milk, or even coconut milk, and use a vegan yogurt.
- Alternative sweetener - If you don't have it, or using honey is something you are not comfortable with, you can use an equal amount of agave, maple syrup, stevia, monk fruit sweetener, or your favorite choice.
- Thinner smoothie - There have been smoothies that I liked more than others just because they weren't too thick. If you like your smoothies on the thinner side, just decrease or eliminate the yogurt and use more milk.
- Orange Julius - If you don't know what that is, I feel really old, but trust me on this, trade out any type of milk for orange juice and you are drinking the best thing to come out of a mall in the 1980's!
- Green smoothie - Add a handful of spinach, kale, or chard.
- Fruit smoothie - You can add your favorite fruits like blueberries or strawberries, or out of season you can substitute the ice with frozen fruit like mango chunks.
- Don't like bananas? - How did you even find this recipe? 😜 But seriously, I am not a huge banana lover, yet I love things like banana muffins. It's about balance. Try substituting one ripe banana with some peach slices, half a mango, or even a bunch of blueberries! Or just leave them out for a creamy avocado smoothie recipe.
- Protein and seeds - You can add some of your favorite protein powder, almond butter, or seeds like chia seeds or hemp if you like that kind of stuff. Is my bias showing? I made this face 😖 while typing that.
- Peanut butter smoothie - Finally, my husband wants you to know that you can add a couple of tablespoons of peanut butter, but only if you want to enjoy life to its fullest. His words.
The moral of the smoothie story is, do whatever you want. It's your smoothie and you'll blend what you want to.
Do I need a high speed blender to make a smoothie?
You should use a some type of blender. We aren't trying to blend anything hardcore here, so an affordable starter blender, like the Black and Decker blender I used to have, will work fine. I have since upgraded to my Nuwave blender, but it was gifted to me and if it weren't I would still be using my old one.
More important than what blender you use is how you load you blender. You need to start with at least half of your liquids, so the other ingredients don't get chunked around the blades. If you have a starter blender, you will want to break up your ingredients into smaller pieces, so it doesn't have to work as hard.
You can also make an individual smoothie using a personal sized or portable blender. If you choose to do that you'll want to decrease this recipe into fourths and make sure to break up your ingredients.
(p.s. you can also make this in a food processor. just make sure you don't go over the liquid limit line.)
Instructions
I am probably breaking this smoothie recipe into too many steps, but to be honest the pictures were just so pretty and I wanted to show them off. Indulge me and then make a smoothie to cheers me!
Step 1: Pour milk into the blender jug.
Step 2: Add ice cubes. 4 to 5 should be enough. Add more if you have small ice cubes.
Step 3: Plop in your plain yogurt. I prefer the tanginess and thickness of Greek yogurt. But use what you prefer.
Step 4: Add in your very ripe bananas. They don't have to be black bananas, but should have a lot of brown spots because if they aren't ripe they will taste chalky in the smoothie.
Step 5: Chunk in your avocados. It should go without saying that you need to remove the pit and not add the skin, but once someone on Ibstagram asked me and I reacted like a lawyer calculating liability. Just the avocado meat (?)
Step 6: Add in honey or whatever sweetener you prefer. If your bananas are ripeity-ripe, taste after blending and if it tastes at all chalky, add more and blend again.
Step 7: Blend on high or the smoothie setting, for about 30 seconds. Use a long handles spoon or other utensil to get to the bottom and stir, then blend another 30 seconds.
Step 8: Pour into the cutest glass you have, grab a straw and sip your cares away!
Thickness note: Bananas and avocados just refuse to be a uniform size. I don't know if it's a union thing or what, but sometimes they have the nerve to be giant bananas and teensy avocados, or vice versa. And that affects smoothie thickness. If you go to take a sip and feel like it's too thick for you, just pour it back into the blender, add some more milk, and blend to your preferred consistency. The nerve of some fruits, right?
Tips for a smoother smoothie
If you are like me, you have avoided the smoothie world because of the texture. Smoothies can be too gritty due to seeds, or undissolved protein powders... so may reasons. Here are a few tips to making it go down easy:
- Blend, blend, blend - Blend the living daylights out of your smoothie. Break up all the things as much as possible.
- Stir - Make sure to use a long spatula or spoon to get to the hidden bits in all the nooks and crannies of your blender and stir it around. Leave no seed or pulp unblended.
- Strain - Use a fine mesh strainer to strain out any lumps, seeds, or larger gritty bits of fiber, herbs or veggies, flaxseed, chia, oats... whatever you add to your smoothies.
Recipe FAQs
Smoothies are best consumed immediately after blending, but you can make it the night before and store in a resealable jar or mason jar. They can separate a bit so, in the morning you can grab one and give it a vigorous shake and then sip and enjoy!
You can make these in advance and store for up to a month in the freezer. Blend and transfer to lidded jars. Make sure to leave room at the top for expansion. Place in the freezer. If you want a smoothie in the morning, place a jar in the refrigerator to thaw and give it a good shake in the morning. If there are icy bits, that's even better in my book!
