Ingredients & Substitutions

Below are all the ingredients you need to make a delicious fruit smoothie with yogurt. I'm adding blueberries to this one, but you can add whatever fruit you like. Let's look over the (very few) major players and how you can make changes if you need:

Ingredients needed to make a yogurt and fruit smoothie.
  • Fruit - I prefer to use fresh fruit, but absolutely use frozen fruit if it's out of season or if I want a thicker consistency. I buy frozen strawberries and raspberries, and even use my own frozen mixed berries in smoothies all the time. If using small pieces of fruit, like tiny blueberries, you'll use one and a half cups, but if you're using larger chunks like strawberries or mango or peaches, you'll use 2 cups of fruit.
  • Yogurt - I prefer a thicker yogurt, such as Greek yogurt, French yogurt, or skyr. If you use a thinner yogurt, your finished smoothie will be that much thinner. Adding a banana or a handful of ice will thicken the consistency.
  • Milk (or liquid of your choosing) - Your smoothie, your rules! Whether you go classic with milk, keep it dairy-free with almond or soy, or lean tropical with coconut milk or coconut water, the choice is yours. Even fruit juice, like pineapple or orange juice, can get in on the action! Just remember—liquid goes in first. It keeps your blender happy and your smoothie silky smooth (because nobody wants a blade battle with frozen fruit).
  • Honey - I like to use nice thick honey to sweeten my fruit smoothie, but you can use agave or regular sugar or even your favorite stevia or monk fruit sweetener.
  • Jam or preserves - This is a totally optional ingredient that I didn't even include in the picture because it's that optional. If your yogurt is not particularly sweet or you just want to amp up the fruit flavors, add a tablespoon of complementary jam or preserves. In this case I added a tablespoon of blueberry preserves.

See recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.

Variations

Oh my gosh if I was going to give you all the variations on a fruit smoothie we would be writing an entire book. Not out of the question, but not today. Here are my favorite fruit smoothie variations to hold you over for now:

  • Peach - Although I'm not normally a huge banana fan, I love this peach banana smoothie that is really peach forward and so delicious!
  • Strawberry - Add strawberries to your yogurt smoothie. I mean - a strawberry smoothie  is like having a strawberry milkshake for breakfast and I'm a big big fan!
  • Mango-coconut - A tropical mango smoothie made with coconut milk is thick and rich, no banana necessary - although you can add one if you like.
  • Boost the protein: Go for Greek yogurt, then toss in a scoop of your favorite protein powder, nuts, or a spoonful of nut butter for a more satisfying sip.
  • Smoothie bowl magic: Skip the cup and grab a spoon! Use Greek yogurt and ice for a thicker texture, then top with nuts or seeds for extra crunch and extra fruit for a more filling start to the day.

Freezing fruit for smoothies

Love smoothies? Keep a stash of fruit in the freezer! It locks in flavor and nutrients while making your smoothies ice-cold and thick—no actual ice needed. Before your fruit goes bad, slice and freeze on a tray, then store in bags in the freezer for 6 to 9 months for future blending. Even tricky fruits like strawberries and melon work fine when destined for a smoothie. Then anythime you want a smoothie, grab a ready-made frozen mix from the freezer for a fuss-free fruit smoothie fix!

Equipment: Blenders

We aren't trying to blend anything too difficult here, it's a smoothie for goodness sake. An affordable one, like the Black and Decker blender I used to have, will work fine. I have since upgraded to a Vitamix blender and I love how absolutely smooth my smoothies are, but you should use the best blender that you can afford. Don't feel pressured to buy something fancy. Again, it's smoothie for goodness sake.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Making a smoothie is so easy I feel like I should just call each of you and say "here's what you do", but that's not how the Internet or Food blogs work, so below you'll find some nice pictures. Make a smoothie. You won't regret it!

Step 1: Add milk and yogurt to your blender.

Step 2: Add honey or other sweetener of your choice. This is where you could add a ripe banana if you wanted it for thickness and sweetness.

Step 5: Blend on low for about 10 seconds to get things started, then increase to high, or the smoothie setting, for about 30 seconds. Use a long handled spoon or other utensil. to get to the bottom and stir, cover again and then blend for another 30 seconds.

Expert smoothie tips

Here are a few tips to ensure smooth smoothie success every time:

  • Liquid first: Always add your liquid (milk and yogurt) to the blender before the fruit to keep the blades moving smoothly.
  • Frozen fruit can be your friend: Adding some, or all, frozen fruit can help make your smoothie thick, cold, and creamy—no need for ice! Keep frozen fruit and berries on hand to thicken your smoothie without ice.
  • Balance the flavors: Too tart? Add a drizzle of honey or a ripe banana. Too thick? A splash more liquid will fix it.
  • Boost the nutrition: Add protein with Greek yogurt, a scoop of protein powder, or nut butter, and sneak in extra fiber with a teaspoon of chia or flax seeds.
  • Blend in stages: Start slow to break up big chunks, then increase speed for a super smooth finish.
  • Drink immediately: Smoothies taste best fresh, but if you must store one, keep it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a day—just shake it really well before sipping!

Got extra Greek yogurt? You can make so many things with just Greek yogurt and self-rising flour! There's an amazingly soft flatbread, easy no-yeast bagels, and don't get me started on my skillet English muffins! All with just two ingredients! 🤯

Recipe FAQs

Can I make this smoothie vegan?

Absolutely! Swap in a dairy-free alternative milk and use vegan yogurt or silken tofu for creaminess.

Can I prep smoothies ahead of time?

Yes! Blend and store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 24 hours, or freeze in portions and thaw when needed. Just be sure to give it a good shake or a quick buzz in the blender before drinking.

My smoothie is too tart—how do I fix it?

Add a bit of honey, maple syrup, or a ripe banana to naturally sweeten it up. Be sure it's a very, very ripe banana though, because a "young" banana can leave your smoothie tasting chalky.

Can I incorporate fresh greens into this yogurt smoothie?

Yes you can! Add one cup of fresh greens, I recommend baby spinach, to your smoothie just before adding your fruit. Taste, and adjust for sweetness, if needed.

Notes

Meal prep: Gather all your favorite fruits together—except for the yogurt and milk—freeze on a tray, and then transfer them to a zip top bag. Label the bag and pop it into the freezer for up to 9 months. When you want to make a delicious smoothie, dump the ingredients straight into the blender, add the milk, yogurt, and sweetenr (no need for ice) and blend into a delicious smoothie.
Make ahead: Smoothies are best consumed immediately after blending, but you can make it the night before and store in a resealable jar or mason jar. They can separate a bit so, in the morning you can grab one and give it a vigorous shake and then sip and enjoy!
Freeze smoothies: Make these in advance and store for up to a month in the freezer. Blend and transfer to lidded jars. Make sure to leave room at the top for expansion. Place in the freezer. If you want a smoothie in the morning, place a jar in the refrigerator to thaw and give it a good shake or a quick blender buzz in the morning.
